Environmental organization Sustainable Chemistry Center coming to Bonn

Bonn · The “International Sustainable Chemistry Collaborative Centre” represents more growth for Bonn in the area of sustainability. New staff there will work closely with the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

Bonn will become home to an international center for sustainable chemistry. On Wednesday in Berlin, German Minister of the Environment Barbara Hendricks handed over the foundation charter to the Managing Director, Friedrich Barth. The “International Sustainable Chemistry Collaborative Centre” (ISC3) will work closely together with the United Nations and is expected to help the UN in meeting its targeted sustainable development goals.

“The world is faced with major challenges, such as global population growth, poverty, hunger and deteriorating environmental conditions, increasing migration, climate change, scarcity of resources and the worldwide erosion of stable ecosystems,” reads the ISC3 website. It notes that the chemical industry plays a key role in relation to these challenges and can contribute to achieving sustainable development goals through innovations which are suitable for the commercial market.

Minister Hendricks said, “From today on, we will be able to make a substantial contribution to national and world wide chemical industry politics from the UN location in Bonn.” Initially, 20 staff are expected to work closely with UNEP, the environmental program of the UN. The German government will be supporting the international center this year with 1.7 million euros. From the year 2018, the amount will increase to 2.4 millions euros.
