Arrest Thief brought silverware to Bonn jeweller

Bonn · A Bonn jeweller called in police support to his shop on Saturday. A thief known to police was trying to sell stolen silverware there.

Only a few hours after police had recorded the burglary of an apartment in Kessenich on Saturday, they were able to return the loot to the apartment owner after a decisive lead from an eyewitness. According to police, a jeweller in Bonn city centre approached officers from the Gabi police station on foot patrol at around 5pm. He told the police that someone was currently in his shop offering a large amount of silverware for sale – about 20 kilogrammes in total.

The officers followed the jeweller and met an old acquaintance again in the shop. A 43-year-old man, who was already known to police for property offences and breaches of drugs laws, had carried a considerable quantity of silverware into the shop in his rucksack and a bag. When he saw the police, he threw a glove and a screwdriver to the ground and tried to explain that the silverware belonged to a relative who was currently living abroad.

The police did not believe him and, as well as a second glove, also secured a stolen mobile phone from him. This was stolen from a courier van in Bonn city centre on 8 December.

The owner of the silverware identified his valuables a short time later at the police station. According to police, they had “clearly” been stolen during the burglary that afternoon.

The 43-year-old was detained by police and later released. The public prosecutors’ office saw no grounds for detaining him in custody. Further investigations are being conducted by the Criminal Investigation Department.
