Airport noise opponents Thousands fight expansion of Cologne/Bonn Airport

RHINE-SIEG COUNTY · The Noise Protection Association Cologne/Bonn Airport has handed over 14,000 signatures to the district government, expressing opposition to expansion plans for the airport.

Most of the residents who have expressed opposition to the Cologne/Bonn Airport expansion are from Siegburg, Hennef and Rösrath, according to the Noise Protection Association (LSG). LSG said it was very satisfied with the number of signatures and it has submitted the petition against airport expansion to Birgitta Radermacher, a government official in Düsseldorf.

For the first time, the growing airport has to submit a plan for approval due to a ruling by the Federal Administrative Court. It also means that the public will be involved in the process. Residents in the region had until last Tuesday to submit their objections. Part of the objection has to do with new buildings that would be constructed around the airport to optimize operations. The LSG, the cities of Siegburg, Lohmar and Hennef are concerned that this will increase air traffic and airport noise at night.

Both Siegburg and Lohmar hired FDC Airport Consulting to formulate the objections of the cities. The Hennef environmental committee rejected the airport plans in a statement. In addition, according to LSG, the Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz (Friends of the Earth Germany) has also raised serious objections to further airport expansion.
