December 14 - 16 Weekend tips for Bonn and the region

Bonn/Region · The Bonnvoice Christmas concert will certainly put you in a holiday mood, and the Birds & Kisses Christmas market sounds like it offers a unique twist. In Cologne, the Blue Man Group will be moving to a thunderous beat, and “Night of the Proms” features international stars.

1) Bonnvoice Christmas concert

Bonnvoice: The talented Bonn choir has made it to the final round of the WDR regional television competition “Der beste Chor im Westen” (“The best choir in the West”). You can see them perform their Christmas concert "Klingeling" - A cappella at the Kreuzkirche (Kreuz Church) at Kaiserplatz, 7:30pm on Saturday, December 15. Tickets are 12 euros.

2) Life and death of King John!

Life and death of King John!: The Bonn University Shakespeare Company (BUSC) performs the play in English: Chaos reigns in England and France, while the two kings John and Philip are involved in a war of succession over the British throne. And the diabolical puppeteer in the background, the illegitimate daughter of Richard the Lionheart, sets the two parties against each other with relish.

Tickets in advance are 15.30 euros with reductions for some who are eligible. December 11 - 14, 8pm, Brotfabrik, Bonn-Beuel.

3) Christmas market Birds & Kisses

Christmas market Birds & Kisses at BaseCampBonn: Hot punch, mulled wine and waffles and other specialties await visitors, along with a bonfire, candles, Christmas trees,and in between and under sparkling chains of lights you'll find exhibitors with small but fine products.

It’s a chance to buy Christmas presents and get in the mood for the upcoming holidays. Art, food, accessories and furniture; more information at www.birdsandkisses.de, Bonner BaseCamp, In der Raste 1, 6 - 10pm, Friday, 12 - 8pm Saturday, 12 - 6pm Sunday.

4) The Night Watchman tour in English

Travel with the night watchman through Bonn. A walk through the darker, wilder sides of the city. These were dangerous times and the tasks which faced the night watchman meant that it was certainly not an easy job. Apart from dealing with the normal rabble and riff-raff in and around the city, the electoral capital of Bonn was threatened in the 17th century by war, fire and pestilence with the bubonic plague.

Meeting place: Rheingasse, on the corner of Brassertufer, Duration: Approx. 2 hours, Fee: € 10 - 12 euros, Friday at 7pm.

5) Advent cruise on the Rhine with the Moby Dick

Moby Dick Christmas boat ride: Experience a Christmas round trip ride (without getting off) on the Moby Dick river cruiser on the Rhine between Bonn and Königswinter with live Christmas music. There is a menu with a large selection of food and drinks, such as mulled wine, delicious waffles or hearty stews.

Departures are at 12:30pm and 3pm and the trip lasts around 2 hours. All cruises leave from docking bridge 9 at the Alter Zoll. 12,50 € per person (advance booking price via www.bonnticket.de)

Children from 4 to 13 years cost 7,50 € and the price at the door is €15.50. The price includes the boat trip and live music. Sunday, December 16 and Saturday, December 22 at 12:30pm only.

6) Cover songs from Bob Dylan to Lady Gaga

Cover song chill: For those looking for a chill afternoon into evening, away from the holiday stress, here’s a low key alternative. Rose Valley will play cover songs from Bob Dylan to Lady Gaga at Sonja's, Friedrichstr. 13, 4pm, Saturday (0228) 635825.

7) American settlement photos

American settlement photos: For the year end meeting of the citizen initiative “Save the American Settlement Plittersdorf”, all members of the public are invited. Some new photos and faces from the earlier years of the neighborhood in the 1950’s will be presented, and there will be a report on the current political situation concerning the former international kindergarten.

A picture postcard set with 13 photos from the American settlement will be on sale for 6 euros. Mulled wine and cookies will be served, and there will be time for casual conversation. Friday, December 14 at 7pm, Stimson Memorial Chapel, Kennedyallee 150, Plittersdorf.

8) Riverside lights

River shore lights Bad Neuenahr: Experience a unique festive atmosphere in the spa gardens of Bad Neuenahr, in the setting on the Ahr river bank. Visitors will be enchanted by the dreamlike lighted atmosphere and decorations from master florist Gregor Lersch, along with hand made arts and crafts, jewelry and more.

Discover the regional specialities and unusual offers of the culinary stands in the Kurpark. On Friday, December 7 the theme is “Christmas in Great Britain”, on the 8th, Saturday, it is “Christmas in Italy,” and on the 9th, Sunday, it is “Christmas in the Netherlands” and “Christmas in the whole world.” Kurgartenstraße, 53474 Bad Neuenahr-Ahrweiler.

9) “Night of the Proms” in Cologne

“Night of the Proms” concert: Classical meets pop - this has been a successful recipe for a show that is now touring Germany for the 25th time. This year’s concert features Belgian singer-songwriter Milo, German singer Tim Bendkzo, and Roxy Music legend Bryan Ferry. Tickets start at 29.95 euros, shows are on Friday and Saturday at 8p, Lanxess Arena, Willy-Brandt-Platz 3, 50679 Cologne.

10) Blue Man Group in Cologne

The Blue Man Group is on a world tour with its original program. The three blue men have already reached 35 million people in 20 countries. A band accompanies the three protagonists in a furious drum choreography, with mainly improvised and oversized percussion instruments shaping the beat of a unique show.

The show is peppered with unpredictable twists and turns and surprising high-tech effects: Water vortex drums and color eruptions may be the reason why visitors of the first rows may want to come in a rain cape. COMING UP

“Magic of the Dance”: The successful Irish show “Magic of the Dance” combines the top tap dancers of the world with wonderful music and an exciting love story for a fast-paced and thrilling performance. It combines both traditional tap with modern dance with innovative choreography. The love story is told by none other than Hollywood star Sir Christopher Lee known from “Lord of the Rings”.
