New measuring system for the city center Where most pedestrians in Bonn are on the move

BONN · A new measuring system allows for analysis of pedestrian flow in the city center of Bonn. Find out where most people are on the move and when.

Remigiusstraße is the street in Bonn that is most highly frequented by pedestrians. Poststrasse and Sternstrasse come in second and third. The volume of visitors on these three streets is heaviest in the second half of the week. During Advent season, it is particularly busy, and also during special events such as “Bühne frei für Beethoven" or St. Martin as well as "Bonn shines" or the "Bonn Festival”. These events combined with Sunday shopping mean the numbers skyrocket. The analysis is the result of a frequency measurement system installed by Hystreet.com GmbH. It has been in effect for the aforementioned streets since May.

Hystreet is currently conducting these measurements in so-called 1a locations in several major cities. "Measurements are taken around the clock throughout the year," explained Arnulf Marquardt Kuron of the city's economic development department, which evaluated the freely accessible data between August 2018 and January 2019. The measuring points are not made public due to concerns about vandalism and they function similarly to light sensors, according to Marquardt Kuron. Previously, pedestrians were counted by hand - only once a year due to the effort involved. "But pedestrian frequencies are an important indicator for assessing the attractiveness of shopping and city centers," said Bonn's business development expert Viktoria Appelbe.

The Bonn statistics showed a positive development. Even during the visit of the German Tour on Thursday, August 23, when retailers feared that there would be fewer customers in the city, it was as crowded as always on the weekday. A total of 5,126,305 pedestrians were counted on Remigiusstrasse, 4,828,750 on Poststrasse and 4,149,198 on Sternstrasse during the five months. "The figures are valuable data for the local retailers, who are coming under increasing pressure, as well as for the organizers," said Appelbe. They provide information on how to make the city center even more attractive.

In view of the dispute between the city of Bonn and the Verdi trade union over the opening of shops on Sundays, they will also form a basis for the approval procedure in the future.
