Weather in Bonn and the region Will there be a White Christmas this year?

BONN · Every year it’s the same question: Will we have snow on Christmas Eve? Meteorologists tell us whether or not there is hope for Bonn and the region.

Just a week before Christmas Eve, it’s sill uncertain whether snow will cover the ground. Strong high pressure and low pressure areas are competing against each other to dominate the weather pattern. According to preliminary forecasts, the low pressure area that is coming from the west and moving across Iceland will gain some strength and the high pressure area that is responsible for the mild December weather will move to eastern Europe.

“In this configuration of high and low pressure areas, a so-called border weather situation can occur in Central Europe,” said meteorologist Matthias Habel from WetterOnline (Weather Online) in Bonn. In such a situation, he explained that cold, dry air meets with warm and humid air, “which can lead to snowfall.”

It could be that some people in Germany will have snow for Christmas. Because the weather pattern is uncertain, Habel says that an accurate prediction will only be possible just before Christmas. Other European weather forecasters are also not making any predictions for the Christmas holidays because of the possibility of short-term changes.

According to the WetterOnline website, there is a 60 percent chance of precipitation on December 24, with a temperature of one to five degrees Celsius. The last time all of Germany experienced a white Christmas was in 2010. (Orig. text: Alexandra Mölleken)
