Construction of air dome Winter season starts at Friesdorf outdoor pool

Friesdorf · The air dome has been up over the Friesdorf swimming pool since the weekend. The first winter season there starts on Tuesday.

After the first test run at the end of April, the Friesdorf open air pool had its roof on again on Saturday, meaning the first winter season in the air dome can start.

However, it is not as easy as one might think to fill the cover with air so that it inflates. It is quite a backbreaking job requiring several strong men to pitch in. First, for example, the membrane cover is pulled over the pools. This weighs 700 grams per square metre, or for 2500 square metres, almost two tonnes in weight.

Further layers follow: a thermal-insulating foil, a protective foil and a steel net. Then the whole thing is inflated. The workers constructed steel scaffolding inside. The dome, rented from the company Paranet-Deutschland, is so stable that you can swim in it in winds up to force ten. You access the pools from the changing rooms through a corridor and a revolving door.

According to the city press office, the winter season starts in the Friesdorf open air pool on Tuesday 18 September. The rest of the work and cleaning will be done on Monday. The hall will also be inspected and approved by experts.

The air dome over the Friesi at Margaretenstraße 14 will now allow the open air pool to be used all year. The costs for four years – including construction and dismantling as well as air dome rental – come to around 1.3 million Euros.

Besides school and club use, the pool is open to the public during the following times: Mondays from 6.30am to 4pm; Tuesdays from 6.30am to 9pm; Wednesdays from 8am to 4pm; Thursdays from 6.30am to 3pm, Fridays from 6.30am to 4pm; Saturdays from 10am to 7pm and Sundays from 10am to 4pm.
