Charity run in the Rheinaue Zero Hunger Run raises more than 41,000 Euros

Bonn · More than 41,000 Euros were raised to alleviate world hunger in the Zero Hunger Run organised by Welthungerhilfe in the Bonn Rheinaue on Sunday. Participants were a mixture of serious runners and those running for fun.

It was clear by the afternoon that the target had been reached and the level of donations was far higher than last year. The Zero Hunger Run organised by Welthungerhilfe raised 41,434 Euros on Sunday. The sum was mostly made up of the entry fees (generously rounded up) of the 1682 runners but also included individual donations.

The first runners in the five kilometre race started at 11 a.m. and included the Lord Mayor, Ashok Sridharan. He is an experienced runner and was competing for the “Duisdorf Renn-Esel” team. The team was started last year by Christos Katzidis and Christine Strunck-Heines and had 15 members on the course on Sunday. Strunck-Heines was looking forward to the mayor’s participation and was delighted after the race: “The course is great and the atmosphere is super.”

The Zero Hunger Run was being organised for the second time by Welthungerhilfe in the Rheinaue. A hundred per cent of all donations go towards Welthungerhilfe projects, through which it continues to work towards the UN goal of “Zero Hunger by 2030.”

As well as those running for fun, top sporting performances could also be experienced on Sunday. First home in the five kilometre race were Therese Schuhenn (18 minutes 54 seconds) from SSF Bonn Triathlon Youth and Aaron Wagner (16 minutes 14 seconds) from Bonn University. First places in the ten kilometre race were taken by Caitlin Vail (39 minutes 11 seconds) from SSF Bonn and Arnim Grothe (33 minutes 33 seconds) from USC Bochum.
