Bonn · Some people waited eagerly for the opening of the ice rink "Bonn on Ice" and following the countdown, they stormed onto the ice. The GA will once again offer a family day this year.
The countdown was on and the first skaters waited impatiently on Wednesday afternoon for the opening of the ice rink “Bonn on Ice” at the Alten Zoll for the 2019/2020 season.
“We need one entire week to build up the seven- to eight-centimeter-thick ice cover,” said organiser Otmar Kaiser. Everyone – whether beginner or professional – is welcome on the more than 1,000-square-meter ice surface. Anyone who wants to venture onto the ice can do so regardless of the weather.
What is new this year is that the area to the rear of the rink has been enlarged. This adjacent hall can be entered from the front hall and everything is roofed over, so that no water will be left on the ice surface, which will reduce the risk of slipping. The ice will not only used for skating, but also for curling on five lanes that will be specifically closed off for this purpose.
The bistro is a big draw for many visitors. “People from the city come here for their first mulled wine, especially in the first few days,” Kaiser said. "The atmosphere here is really fantastic," enthused one visitor, referring not only to the festive Christmas lighting on the ice rink.
For the last seven years, the Bonn ice rink has been set up close to the city centre in the Stadtgarten am Alten Zoll. "Due to its proximity to the subway station and the city centre, many children and young people arrive by public transport. But the gastronomy and retail trade in the city centre also benefit from the approximately 40,000 guests who come here over seven or eight weeks," says Kaiser.
The rink is now open until mid-February, from Sunday to Thursday between 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Fridays and Saturdays until 10 p.m. On Christmas Eve, you can skate from from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Christmas Day and Boxing Day, everyone can venture onto the ice from 12 a.m. to 9 p.m. The ice rink is also open on New Year's Eve from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on New Year's Day from 12 a.m. to 9 p.m. Children up to the age of three have free admission; those up to and including eleven, pay 4 euros. Teenagers and adults pay 6 euros from Monday to Thursday, reduced to 4 euros from 7 p.m.
