On United Nations Day, UN member states recall the United Nations Charter, established on October 24,1945. The UN-city of Bonn traditionally organizes a citizens' festival at the Markt in the city center to recognize this day. It will take place this Saturday, October 12 with around 30 international and federal institutions, and aid organizations from Bonn there to mark the occasion.

Virtual trip to Madagascar

The focus of the festival will be on the UN's development goals. The UN Refugee Agency, for example, will be showcasing a lightweight family tent used in crisis areas. The agency will have the help of comedian Dave Davis, who will be at the Markt from 1 pm. The German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development invites you to a virtual trip to Madagascar, where you can experience climate change and its effects first hand with the help of VR glasses, rotating chairs and headphones.

At the stand of the International Paralympic Committee, visitors can experience for themselves what it is like to live with a disability through use of a wheelchair simulator and a course for the blind. Paralympic athletes will be on hand to sign autographs. The Oro Verde Tropical Forest Foundation provides information about its work and how to protect the rainforest in everyday life. It also offers an acoustic journey into the rainforest.

Live music and children’s magician

The city is also represented and will be showcasing its commitment to sustainability. The Lower Nature Conservation Authority, for example, is offering a plant quiz and information on the new nature trail "Biodiversity in the City". From 11:30 am to 6 pm there will be live music on stage. The BAP cover band "MAM" (5pm), "Adesa" (3:30pm), the band "UNbearables & friends" (11:30am, 1155am and 2pm) and children's magician "Mecki" will also be there.

Due to the citizens' festival and the related setup work, the weekly produce market will be moved to Münsterplatz this Friday. On Saturday the merchants will offer their goods on Friedensplatz, Bottlerplatz and Vivatsgasse.

On the occasion of the United Nations Day, the city also extends an invitation to a discussion session on Friday, October 11 at 4:30 pm at Deutsche Welle. The topic will be "Opportunities and challenges of German membership of the United Nations Security Council".
