The rabbit population in the Botanical Gardens at Poppelsdorf Castle continues to increase. This led to a decision by the university to shoot and kill the animals. The herbivorous animals have caused considerable damage to the exotic plants and gardens in recent months, explains the university. Attempts to drive the rabbits out of the gardens have proved unsuccessful.

For that reason, the rabbits will be hunted in the Poppelsdorf Castle gardens on Saturday, December 7, from 7:30 to 9 a.m. and again on Saturday, December 14, from 3:30 to 5 p.m.. If one hears shots fired during this time in the vicinity, they are likely related to the hunt.

The university's rabbit-reduction initiative has been approved by the City of Bonn and will be carried out by licensed hunters. There is no danger for employees or residents. Police headquarters has been informed in advance of the shoot in case citizens call in because of concern over gun shots being heard.
