Green Party Bonn’s new Mayor Katja Dörner begins serving her term

Bonn · Katja Dörner has taken up her new role as Mayor of Bonn. At 9 a.m. she moved into her office in the Stadthaus. Some bitter news for her at the beginning: talks with the Green party District Mayor Brigitta Poppe-Reiners have failed for the time being.

Bonn's new Mayor Katja Dörner (Greens) took up office on Monday morning. It started off with her receiving some unwelcome news. No sooner had Dörner moved into her office on the twelfth floor of the Stadthaus at around 9 a.m. - then the news made the rounds: Her Green party friend and current District Mayor Brigitta Poppe-Reiners (63) was said to have decided to leave the Greens' district faction in Bonn after failed mediation talks. The GA learned this from reliable sources this morning.

Whether she will also turn her back on the city council faction, as she had indicated last week, is likely still open. The Green party district mayor announced on Monday that she had not yet made her decision known in writing and wanted to wait out the day.

The background to this is Poppe-Reiner's being voted out of office in her district faction as a candidate for the office of district mayor for the new city council session. Instead of Poppe-Reiners, the district elected newcomer Eva Kuzu (50) as candidate last Thursday. Conciliatory talks over the weekend, in which Dörner also participated, have failed for the time being.

Dörner had not yet heard the news of her Green party friend's departure from the faction when she took office. She appeared to be in good spirits as she rode her bicycle to her new office at Berliner Platz, where she was received not only by city spokeswoman Monika Hörig but also by members of the media. In view of the bike racks there, which were full, she spontaneously promised to significantly improve the situation for cyclists in Bonn. Dörner will take up office in a different space than her predecessor Ashok Sridharan. Her office is now headed by her former campaign manager David Thyssen.
